Beetroot Juice: The Unglamorous Performance Drink With A Surprisingly Good CV

It stains everything it touches, tastes like earthy ambition, and has a stronger evidence base for endurance performance than most things in the supplement aisle. Nobody saw this coming.

Nobody put beetroot juice on their vision board. Nobody named it their pre-workout of choice at a dinner party. It is purple, it tastes like the earth itself decided to become a beverage, and it turns your bathroom a colour that will alarm you the first time it happens.

It also has one of the more robust evidence bases for endurance performance enhancement of anything currently available without a prescription — which is the kind of fact that deserves more airtime than it gets.

The Mechanism — Why It Actually Works

Beetroot is exceptionally rich in inorganic nitrates. When you consume these nitrates, bacteria in your saliva convert them to nitrite, which is then converted in the bloodstream to nitric oxide — a molecule that relaxes and dilates blood vessels, improving oxygen delivery to working muscles.

The practical effect is improved exercise efficiency: your muscles can produce the same power output for a lower oxygen cost, which translates to better endurance, faster time trials, and a delay in the onset of fatigue. Multiple well-designed trials have found meaningful improvements in time-to-exhaustion and time-trial performance, particularly in sub-elite athletes.

Where The Effect Is Strongest

The benefits show up most clearly in sustained aerobic efforts — cycling, running, rowing, swimming over longer distances. The research on elite athletes is more mixed, possibly because their cardiovascular systems are already so efficient that the marginal gains are smaller. For recreational to sub-elite athletes, the effect is consistently more pronounced.

"

Beetroot juice is one of the few food-based performance interventions that has earned its reputation through repeated, independent research rather than supplement company funding.

Practical Notes

Concentrated beetroot shots — the small 70ml bottles — are a more practical format than drinking 500ml of juice before a workout. Avoid using antibacterial mouthwash before or after consuming beetroot, since it kills the oral bacteria responsible for converting nitrate to nitrite, which is exactly the conversion you are trying to trigger.

This is one of the more specific and counterintuitive instructions in sports nutrition: your mouthwash is not compatible with your pre-workout on beetroot day.

Take This To Your Next Meal

Try It Two Hours Before Your Next Long Effort

500ml of beetroot juice or a concentrated shot around two to two and a half hours before a sustained aerobic effort. That's the window the research consistently uses. Your bathroom experience afterwards is between you and the universe.
