Sports Drinks Are
Not for You.
Water Was Fine.
Gatorade was invented for a specific, narrow physiological problem that endurance athletes in sustained high-intensity heat conditions actually have. The marketing was then invented to make everyone feel like they have that problem. Most of them do not.
In 1965, a University of Florida football coach asked a team of researchers why his players were wilting in the heat when athletes from other programs were not. The researchers looked at the problem, concluded that the players were losing electrolytes and fluid through sweat faster than they were replacing them, and mixed up a solution of water, sodium, sugar, potassium, and phosphate. The players drank it. The team went on to win the Orange Bowl. The drink was named after the team's mascot. Gatorade was born, and with it, an entire category of product that has since expanded to include hundreds of variants, generated billions of dollars in annual revenue, and successfully convinced a large proportion of people who sit at desks for eight hours a day that they need to electrolyte-replace their way through a Tuesday morning.
Sports drinks are, for a specific and narrow category of human activity, a legitimate and well-supported product. For almost everything else people use them for, they are expensive, heavily sweetened water doing a job that regular water was already doing for free — with the added bonus of delivering a meaningful dose of sugar and artificial colour to people whose athletic exertion level did not require, or create the physiological conditions to process, either of those things.
When They Actually Make Sense
The science behind sports drinks is real and not in dispute in its proper context. During sustained, vigorous exercise lasting more than sixty to ninety minutes — the kind that produces significant sweat losses, substantially depletes muscle glycogen, and creates genuine electrolyte imbalance — a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink provides meaningful performance support that water alone does not. Endurance athletes, competitive team sport players in sustained high-intensity activity, cyclists riding for hours in heat, marathon runners in the final miles of a race — these are the populations for whom the original Gatorade research was relevant, and for whom the product continues to be appropriate. The carbohydrates provide fuel for muscles running low on glycogen. The electrolytes, particularly sodium, help maintain fluid balance and prevent hyponatraemia in people consuming large volumes of fluid over extended periods. The science is solid. The application is narrow.
The problem is that the marketing for sports drinks has never been about endurance athletes in genuine physiological need. It has been about associating the product with athletic aspiration and physical vitality broadly, until the implicit message became: if you exercise at all, or intend to exercise, or think about exercise while sitting on your sofa, a sports drink is an appropriate accompaniment. The gap between "useful for a person running a half marathon in July heat" and "drunk by a twelve-year-old at a school sports day" is enormous, and the industry has spent fifty years working to close that gap in the direction of consumption rather than in the direction of accuracy.
A sports drink during a ninety-minute high-intensity training session makes physiological sense. The same drink consumed while watching sport on television makes exactly as much sense as taking altitude sickness medication on a walk to the shops.
What They Are for Most People Who Drink Them
For the vast majority of the people drinking sports drinks in the real world — people doing moderate exercise lasting under an hour, people doing light activity, people not exercising at all but drinking them as a flavoured beverage alternative to water or soda — they are primarily a vehicle for delivering sugar and sodium that was not needed, at a price that is not justified, wrapped in packaging that implies a physical capability enhancement that the physiology of their actual activity level does not require and will not produce. A standard 500ml sports drink contains approximately thirty grams of sugar and 270 milligrams of sodium. For a person who just completed a forty-five-minute gym session involving moderate weightlifting and a stationary bike cooldown, neither of those things is physiologically necessary to replace. Their glycogen stores were not meaningfully depleted. Their electrolyte balance does not require commercial intervention. Their kidneys and normal eating will restore whatever modest fluid and mineral losses occurred without assistance from a product that is, at its biochemical core, a dilute sugar solution with a sports sponsorship deal.
The "zero sugar" and "no calorie" variants that followed address the calorie problem while introducing their own discussion about artificial sweeteners — which we may cover in a future instalment — but do nothing to address the more fundamental issue, which is that the product was solving a problem most of its consumers do not have.
What to Drink Instead, and When
For exercise under sixty minutes at moderate intensity: water. Full stop. No supplement, no electrolyte tablet, no coconut water at four times the price of tap water. Your body is not in a state of electrolyte crisis after a thirty-minute run, and treating it as though it is produces nothing except a more expensive hydration habit. For exercise over sixty to ninety minutes at high intensity, particularly in heat: something with carbohydrates and sodium genuinely helps, and a sports drink, a banana and water, or a homemade equivalent of salt, sugar, and water achieves the same outcome. For everyday hydration that is not exercise-related: water remains, as it has been since the Cambrian period, the correct answer. The elaboration around it is almost always a commercial construction rather than a physiological necessity.
Reserve the Sports Drink for Actual Sport
If you are exercising hard for more than ninety minutes in heat, a sports drink earns its place. For everything else — the gym session, the yoga class, the walk, the school sports day, the Tuesday morning commute — water was doing the job before Gatorade existed and continues to do it now, for free, without the sugar. The drink was invented for a specific problem. The marketing was invented to make everyone feel like they have that problem. Most of you do not.
